The week started off with the Nationals taking three back-to-back losses against the Astros, Cardinals, and Marlins. Note that the MLB is still currently in the preseason, so this does not automatically reflect how the Nationals will play in the regular season once it starts. There are many players that have risen above, pronouncing their efforts at strengthening and rounding out their games. For example, Strasburg, who just came back from being on surgery leave for 6 months, was able to display his strengths as a pitcher in the most recent preseason games. If Strasburg can get back to his 2019 playing style, the Nationals will have a shot. The Nationals will take on the Mets, Astros, and Marlins over the next few days before kicking off their regular season against the Mets on April 1st.
Unfortunately, the Wizards have fallen into a four-game losing streak this week. The Wizards are looking to break this streak against the Kings on Wednesday night. Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook are often the focus of the games, but Rui Hacimura is quickly becoming the center of focus. Once Hacimura gets going and the team starts rebounding more, the win against the Kings will fall into their hands. After the Wizards (14-24) take on the Kings (15-24), they will play against the Utah Jazz (29-10) on Thursday.
Unlike the Nationals and Wizards, the Washington Capitals have continued to maintain a 6-game winning streak. Over the past few games, a couple of players have achieved some career milestones. Daniel Carlson hit 500 career points against the Flyers, while Evgeny Kuznetsov hit 400 career points against the Sabers. More recently, Alex Ovechkin hit two big milestones in his career; he has now officially passed Phil Esposito with career goal 718, assisted by T.J. Oshie, and reached 1,300 points in a win against the New York Islanders. The Capitals will take on the New York Rangers on Friday, March 19th at 7:00 pm.
The NFL is quickly approaching the 2021 Draft. Over the past weeks, the Washington Football Team has been signing and picking up players left and right. Alex Smith’s release left an open spot for the Washington Team to pick up another QB. Ryan Fitzpatrick has agreed to a 1 year, $10 million deal with the Washington Football Team. Fitzpatrick has started and played on 8 other teams in the NFL during his 16-year career. It has been clear from the start that the Washington team has been putting their focus on strengthening the team’s offense and defense. After not being able to re-sign Ronald Darby, the team signed William Jackson III. Fitzpatrick is a flexible player, which is what the team needs with their current offensive line. Jackson, on the other hand, is one of the best cornerbacks on the free-agent market, despite being injured for most of his season with the Bengals. Overall, between these two players, Washington did what was needed. While they could have put more effort into finding a QB, they did what the team could work with and manage the best.
