The psychological horror film written and directed by Jordan Peele, Us, is the new big hit in cinema since its release in March. It has received a rating of 94% on rotten tomatoes and has grossed over $249 million. Excitement filled the crowds of eager patrons filing in to see the movie and the brilliant film had the audience leaving stunned and chilled to the core at the same time.
The main female character, Red, permanently traumatized from an experience at the beach, has her demons from her past resurface as she goes back to the same beach on a trip with her husband and children. Red’s family never was aware of the event that caused her PTSD and were confused as she is constantly paranoid and frantically keeping an overprotective eye on her children throughout the trip. Her son, daughter, and husband soon come to knowledge with what happened as they become face to face with the hauntings from her past and help to defeat them.
This film is crowd-pleaser for everyone. It has elements of suspense, as well as jumpscares, and tons of mind boggling twists. The film is also sprinkled with comedic jokes to relieve the terror. It is safe to say that Us is not your typical slasher or ghost horror film as it is dense with some many different compelling elements that leave the audience intrigued and satisfied.
The director of Us, Jordan Peele, is well known for his other horror film, Get Out, and is the first African American to win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. “I’m obsessed with giving the audience something they don’t see coming,” Peele commented–which is very evident throughout this movie. All of the films chilling winds and suspenseful turns leading up to a massive twist ending made this horror movie an unforgettable one at the least. An abundance of videos on the topic of Us fill the internet of guesses or theories of an explanation for the major plot twist that occured within the last 10 minutes of the movie that left everyone’s jaw in the theatre dropped. “It achieves an insidious, lingering effect that’s rarer in the horror genre.” says Ben Sachs, a top critic on Rotten Tomatoes.
Us is a genius and incredibly thrilling film that out-steps the boundaries of the imagination and brings to life a story so frightening yet so hard to look away from. I highly encourage all who enjoy mystery, horror, and comedy genres to see Us in theaters, and I promise it will not fail to leave you dumbfounded and will make all other horror movies seem sub par.
