I guarantee you that you’ve seen this movie on Netflix and if you’re anything like me, you have probably ignored it due to the cliched and tacky movie poster. Now that there is literally nothing to watch except horror movies, you have decided to finally give it a try. If not, then that is what you should consider doing. Watch “Love at First Sight.”
“Love at First Sight” was a romance comedy-drama movie released on September 15 2023, starring actors Haley Lu Richardson and Ben Hardy as main roles. The movie was adapted based on the book “The Statistical Probability of Falling in Love ” written by Jennifer E. Smith. In April of 2022, Netflix gained rights to the movie, and a whole year and a half later, the movie finally hit the screens in September of 2023.
As cheesy as the plotline and in the general the whole movie was, it was not bad. The movie was cute and very heartfelt. Disclaimer though, as an empath you’ll end up pouring buckets of tears over several plot points in the movie, so be prepared with tissues if you intend on watching the movie. Overall, I liked the movie. It was adorable, sweet, and in a way it had a happy ending. One flaw though did occur for me closer to the end of the movie. The beginning and middle of the movie was very fast paced but then all of a sudden the ending became very slow and there were a bunch of moments where it’s just characters walking and contemplating their lives.
The movie starts off with the two main characters meeting, one of them being Hadley who is flying to her dad’s wedding in London, but she ends up missing the flight and is forced to buy a ticket to a different flight. She then goes to sit down to wait till her flight and meets Oliver, who is also on his flight to London. The two immediately hit it off and spend time together till their flight and they head off to their seats. When Oliver sits down and realizes his seat belt is broken, he is then moved to another empty seat, which turns out to be next to Hadley. They continue communicating up until their arrival at the airport. They are then separated at the airport in London due to circumstances, and while both then believe they won’t ever see each other again, fate has a whole different plan in mind.
Fortunately, it was a happy ending, and while yes, there were a couple sad parts that you should definitely be aware of before watching the movie, it was pleasing to see the characters together and content. Overall, there weren’t many flaws or mistakes done throughout the movie, but I will say this. The beginning and the middle of the movie was very fast paced, and then closer to the end it became very long and there were a bunch of scenes where it’s just a song playing and characters walking. And walking. For a very long time. Which got really tiring at some point and ended up getting winded forward. Other than that, the movie was great. With all the movies that are releasing today, especially book to movie adaptations, this one was well done and even though I haven’t read the book it was based on, I’ve previously seen online that the changes weren’t drastic and didn’t make the movie worse.
Rotten tomatoes rated the movie 80% from the audience, IMDb rated the movie 6.9/10 and the movie received around 4.3 out of 5 stars in general. Overall, the movie didn’t receive horrible reviews and ratings. The movie mainly got great reviews and ratings. One particular review that seemed to agree with my opinion stated how “The visual aesthetics coupled with a poignant soundtrack heighten the romantic atmosphere and bring an added layer of depth to the story.” which I would have to also agree with. In the end, I would recommend this movie, and who knows? Maybe fate will lead you to enjoy this movie…
