Unfortunately, Perry had a tough battle fighting alcohol and substance addiction. Perry went to rehab many times and ended up getting surgery 14 times. At one point it got so bad he almost died. “The doctors told my family that I had a two percent chance to live,” he shared with the Today Show. Perry has spent around seven million dollars on trying to get sober. He wrote a memoir later in his life; he released it in 2022. “I’ve been in a mental institution, gone to therapy twice a week for thirty years, been to death’s door,” he wrote in his memoir.
After his passing away, his friends that he made from the show Friends wrote how devastated they are, “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family,” their statement read. “There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss,” Jennifer Aniston said, “He was such a part of our DNA. We were always the 6 of us. This was a chosen family that forever changed the course of who we were and what our path was going to be.”
He was best known for acting in the TV show Friends, where he played Chandler. “It wasn’t that I thought I could play Chandler, I was Chandler.” He wrote in his memoir. The show had ten seasons and is one of television’s highest-rating shows. “The show ended when I was 34. It formed my life. And it was the time of my life.” Perry said on a streaming device. Perry won five awards and nominations between 2002 and 2021. Some were for TNT and some for Friends as well as The Best Wing. They all were outstanding guests or lead actor awards, but one was Outstanding Variety Special.
