Fashion Dreamer is a newly released advanced fashion/RPG game uploaded from the Nintendo Switch platform on November 3. It’s a game that focuses on being open-ended and infinitely customizable in any aspect of your model’s clothes. The game was actually designed to be the new updated version of the incredibly popular Style Savvy games that were popular in the 2000s. Style Savvy had a huge cult following in the 2010s and many were hyped to hear that the same developer worked on Fashion Dreamer. However, many were disappointed when the game had a completely different gameplay experience. The goal of Fashion Dreamer is to become a successful fashion influencer. You gain popularity by successfully creating outfits of the desired theme. You create outfits by acquiring clothes and accessories through story quests and other achievements. If connected to the internet, you can also mingle with other players and gain a following through the actual game. It was designed to be cute, aesthetically pleasing, and simple.
You start the game by customizing your own character. For one, the game has an incredible range with all their style categories such as skin tone, hairstyles, and clothing styles. You get a rundown of the game’s goal through a tutorial and mini-games. Different city areas are called cocoons, and in these cocoons are different muses you can interact with and dress up. Each time you please the muses with their desired outfits, you gain hearts that will allow you to have more detailed conversations with them. On top of collecting around 5000 pieces of clothing, you can customize the pieces to your liking. This means style, color, and pattern, which lead to an unlimited amount of customization to your own desire. There are set showrooms that you can decorate to show off your own outfits and style, which will allow you to connect to more players and gain followers. There isn’t intense grinding in the game for the clothing pieces, but there are still shops and gacha machines to acquire special pieces. The game follows very simple rules and the end is based on how much time you wish to put into your world.
There were a few negatives that came with the game, however. I personally did not play Style Savvy Games so I wouldn’t know what to compare it to but many players said it felt lacking in gameplay compared to its predecessor. So many were unhappy with the unfamiliar gaming controls and storyline. Another bad aspect of the game was when you customize your avatar, you choose a Type A feminine model or Type B masculine model. This in itself isn’t bad but later in the game, you realize you can only wear Type A feminine clothes and Type B Masculine clothes for the rest of the game. For a game all about opening new styles and dressing how you want, it was really disappointing. However, one of the worst aspects of the game was the lack of storyline and overall gameplay. There really isn’t an interesting storyline or dialogue that comes with any characters/models you meet on your gaming journey. For me, this made Fashion Dreamer incredibly boring. There also aren’t any interesting events or competitions that spice up the gaming experience and so the tasks become very repetitive. It just really felt like it focused on making the game look pretty and rather than satisfying. It has a 5/10 rating on Nintendo Life but has a record for the highest-selling SKU release of the week with 35,000 copies sold (Gemastu site). A popular gaming review blog, LadiesGamers, said, “In terms of gameplay, I think more should be added. Even though I’m having a good time, I can see why this won’t be enough in the long run. There should be events. And the economics in Fashion Dreamer seem to be off. With just the likes I get, I earn so many stars I don’t; even know what to do with them.”
But aside from the negatives, Fashion Dreamer had plenty of positives as well. Looking at the details put into the game mechanics, the clothes and accessories were really well constructed. There were no model glitches when trying on clothes like in other mediocre fashion games and there was a wide assortment of styles to choose from. I mentioned this previously but the customization section for your avatar really is impressive. On top of a huge shade range for skin, their hairstyle options are incredibly inclusive and pretty. I was especially impressed with the numerous hairstyles that catered to black ethnic hairstyles such as cornrows and dreadlocks. The game is extremely pretty. Models are cute and perky, while the city areas are bright and eye-catching. The promotion for this game was very cute as well. One reddit user under the fashion game review tag said, “It’s really chill, it’s a good game to play while watching TV or listening to something. The models are stunning. The clothes are very fluid and cute. The community aspect is simple, but fun.”.
Overall, I think the game was created with a more dazzling aspect than an interesting one. It’s super interactive and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys fashion and aesthetics when it comes to games. But if you really want to be entertained and need a game to put your hours towards, I do not think the 50 bucks is worth it. I would give this game a solid 6/10 and would recommend it to any fashion enthusiasts.
