On Wednesday, January 3rd, Deobra Redden jumped over an LA judge’s bench in Clark County, Nevada. The judge, Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus, was pushed against the wall in the process. Redden slammed Holthus’s head against the wall, struck Holthus’s head and pulled out some of her hair. Correction officers took Redden off of Holthus as Holthus attempted to escape Redden’s grip.
Judge Holthus was not the only one who had suffered any injuries from the actions of Redden. One of the correction officers, Shane Brandon, was preparing to handcuff Redden when Redden took off. In the process of chasing Redden, he tripped and dislocated his shoulder, as well as receiving 25 stitches to a gash on his face. Another officer, Michael Lasso, was punched by Redden and suffered several cuts to his hand.
Deobra Redden had been there from a previously attempted conviction during a hearing after being convicted of attempted battery causing substantial bodily harm. Redden pleaded guilty and was released from custody.
Due to the attack Redden made on Holthus, Redden received 13 new charges while claiming he “had a bad day” and had tried to kill Holthus because he stated that the “judge has it out for me” and the “judge is evil.” Redden came to his new court hearing with a face shield on, as a precaution of the last court hearing and had previously been “a disruption in the courtroom,” that was stated in the documents of both hearings. Redden received a charge of attempted murder that was included in the 13 new charges.
