Members of the One-Centreville Club have just completed their fourth visit to Centreville Elementary.
The One-Centreville Club started earlier this year and is run by CVHS librarian Mr. Rigsby, and Ms. Hamilton, currently with 65 members. Once a month, groups of students visit Centreville Elementary school classes between preschool and second grade. Leading up to their monthly visits, groups are given a book to read to their buddy class, become familiar with the book by rereading it and finding points in the book to stop and engage with the class. Groups also prepare fun activities for the kids to do after reading. The goal of the club is to create a better community connection, prepare students to work with children in future careers and show their creativity in their activity.
So far, the club has had three visits to the elementary school to 15 different classes. During the first visit with a second grade class, one group read the book “The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors,” an illustrated story about how the game Rock Paper Scissors came to be. For their activity, the group played “rock, paper, scissors” with the kids, under the rule that they could only play with the high schoolers if they stayed silent as they played.
“One Centreville has not only formed strong friendships but also promoted leadership traits through our influence on the elementary students,” says Rosie Dhan, a group member.
Why join? Firstly, it’s a fun way to earn service hours needed for graduation. Second, it’s a way to prepare for future careers with children, like teacher, librarian, social worker and more. Lastly, you get to have fun with friends and express your creativity in creating a fun and engaging activity for your group leading up to your visit. “One Centreville provides a space for friends to practice communication and collaboration skills together. As we practice, we learn from our mistakes and change the way we think about a situation,” says Audrey Payne, another club member.
