Westbrook Chasing Oscar
December 8, 2016
Basketball fans all around the world have been watching Russell Westbrook in amazement as he averaged a triple double so far in the beginning of the season. Westbrook is the starting point guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, who suffered a major loss in the off-season to the Golden State Warriors, due to losing arguably their best player, Kevin Durant.
With many mixed feelings towards the situation, reporters and media outlets tried to turn the two against each other, and blamed Westbrook’s stats as a vengeance to Kevin Durant. Westbrook has denied any ties between the way he plays, and his attitude towards Durant. Westbrook says he plays for his team, and plays to win.
Last season, during Durant’s injury, Westbrook took the league by storm with 18 triple doubles, matching Magic Johnson’s record for the most triple doubles in a season, behind the great Oscar Robertson. Competing with the Laker Legend, Magic Johnson, proves that Westbrook is the real deal and is on track for a great career.
Westbrook is on the path to averaging a triple double for the season, which is nearly impossible and rarely done. In fact, only one player has ever averaged a triple double for a season, and his name is Oscar Robertson, who played with the Cincinnati Royals in the 1961-1962 season.
Russell Westbrook has continued to perform greatly and led his teams to wins, recording his 6th triple double in a row on 12/5/16 against the Atlanta Hawks. Westbrook is the main candidate for the MVP ballot this season and we will see if he can continue to push his team to more victories and break records along the way.
