CVHS Mulch Sale

The CVHS PTSA is holding its annual mulch sale fundraiser. The sale is the primary fundraiser for the All Night Graduation Party for graduating seniors. Some of its proceeds also go to five $1,000 Senior School Scholarships. The sale will allow students to volunteer and give back to their community by delivering approximately 15,000 bags of mulch to the Centreville and Clifton area.

Mulch can benefit one’s garden in many ways. Primarily, mulch is used to kill weeds. According to Scotts, “Weeds need light and warm soil to survive. To use mulch as a natural weed barrier, you need to put down a 3-inch thick layer. That’s enough to keep most weed seeds or roots from sprouting. They won’t have enough energy to push through the mulch.” Mulch can also be used to retain the soil’s moisture, and decomposing organic mulch can help increase the richness of the soil.

Using mulch is simple. According to WikiHow, First, one should clear the area and cut or pull any weeds close to the ground. While this is not strictly necessary, it will help the mulch kill the weeds more easily. After obtaining the mulch, preferably from the CVHS mulch sale, and transporting it to your desired location, one should add a “generous thickness of mulch.” While the thickness can vary, experts recommend at least five to ten centimeters or two to four inches. Lastly, one should use a rake to even out the mulch covered land.

The mulch sale is currently going on and will continue until mid-April. The deadline for online orders is April 15th and paper orders must be in by April 18th. Any questions that one has can be answered by visiting the CVHS Mulch Sale Website.
