Girls Varsity Basketball Season Preview

Ben Dawson

The winter sports season is upon us, which means that it is finally time for basketball! Hoops season has made its long awaited return to Centreville High School, and the Wildcats are primed and ready for a breakout season.

The Wildcats have a new coach in PJ Clark, who is looking to turn her team into a serious contender in the Concorde District. The team certainly has the firepower and the talent to knock off the defending champions, the Oakton Cougars.

“I think you’ll see a lot of similarities with us and what you’ve seen before, though we’ll tweak some things. I’m super-excited about the year. I’ve coached some of these girls when they were freshmen on the JV and it has been amazing to be there with them as they have grown,” Coach Clark told NovaHoops.com .

Clark has an outstanding backcourt at her disposal, with senior guards Whitney Garrett and Ashley Martin. Both are accomplished scorers who have been playing with the varsity squad throughout their career, and will give opposing teams nightmares all season long.

Also returning are the Squirewell sisters, Kaya and Jada, and senior forward Carolyn Hott. The trio will be tasked with filling the scoring void left by the graduation class of last years team. All three are highly capable scorers and should have no problem fitting right into the system.

The Wildcats have recently become notorious for their suffocating defense, and did not give up more than 65 points in a game last season. If the team can continue their dominance on that side of the ball, wins should begin to pile up quickly.
