Bad Bunny performed and won best música urbana album at the Grammys on February 5th. His latest album, Un Verano Sin Ti, is the first Spanish-language album to ever receive a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. Latin music has grown immensely in the American mainstream in the last decade. In fact, consumption of Latin music grew by 28 percent in 2022, and Bad Bunny’s responsible for the top four albums in the genre, according to data from music tracker Luminate. “Un Verano Sin Ti” generated more than 4 billion US streams across several platforms last year.

“Gracias! I made this album with love and passion, nothing else. When you do things with love and passion, everything is easier. Life is easier. Thank you to everyone who listens to my music. Gracias a todos los Latinos. Thanks to all the artists who worked on this album, to the producers. I want to dedicate this award to Puerto Rico, the capital of reggaeton. I want to dedicate it to the legends and not only the legends, but also new artists who keep this movement alive and keep refreshing it. To all the talents, let’s keep taking this genre to new levels. I love you all,” Bad Bunny said after receiving his Grammy award.

Bad Bunny is originally Puerto Rican. He launched his music career on SoundCloud and made his way to the top. In 2016, he dropped “Diles” (“Tell Them”) and got signed to the record label Hear This Music. He then grew to fame with his song “Soy Peor” (“I’m Worse”). In 2018, Bad Bunny collaborated with artists Cardi B and J Balvin on “I Like It.” In the song, Bad Bunny rapped in both Spanish and English, which reached number one on the Billboard Top 100. Later that year, he worked with Drake on “Mía” (“Mine”), which reached number five on the Billboard Top 100. This introduced Bad Bunny to a wider audience in the United States. At the end of 2018, Bad Bunny released his debut album, X 100Pre (an abbreviation for “Por Siempre” or “Forever”). In 2019, Bad Bunny released a joint album with J Balvin named Oasis. In 2020, Bad Bunny performed during the Super Bowl halftime show. Later that month he released his album YHLQMDLG (an acronym for “Yo hago lo que me da la gana,” or “I do whatever I want”).

Bad Bunny’s first Grammy Award was when YHLQMDLG won for best Latin pop or urban album. In late 2020, he released another album, El último tour del mundo (“The Last World Tour”), which became the first Spanish-language album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The record went on to win the Grammy for best música urbana album. Bad Bunny’s latest album, Un Verano Sin Ti (“A Summer Without You”), was released in 2022. Thanks to this album, Bad Bunny won his second Grammy for best música urbana album and several Latin Grammy Awards. Bad Bunny has recently expanded his career to acting. Two years ago, he made his acting debut in Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico. Recently, he co-starred in Bullet Train with Brad Pitt. “I have always dreamed about making movies and acting,” said Bad Bunny before walking the “Bullet Train” pink carpet for his first Hollywood premiere. Bad Bunny will star in the upcoming Sony Spider-Man Universe film, El Muerto and is currently working on a Netflix series called They Both Die at the End.
