On Monday, Oct. 12, Jeffrey Hernandez was arrested for jumping into the 9/11 memorial pool. It was approximately 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon when Hernandez jumped into the memorial pool where he injured himself. Many bystanders watching went into a state of panic when blood started to appear in the water. Jeffrey was rescued shortly after falling into the basin of the pool. He was later rushed to the hospital.
Hernandez has a history of mental illness according to his family. William Hernandez, his older brother, told the New York Post, “Jeffrey suffers from schizophrenia and is bipolar and should be in supervised, residential care for mentally ill people.” His family has been trying to get him into a home for the mentally ill for some time, but Hernandez had been deemed ineligible every time.
Hernandez sustained no-life threatening injuries. “He is lucky to be alive,” Willam said, adding that his brother is in stable condition with a back and leg injury.”
After being medically checked, Hernandez was arrested and charged with property damage. “As a result of the damage, the light fixtures will cost approximately 30 thousand to repair,” the court document says. Hernandez’s next court hearing will take place on Nov. 28, 2023.
