DC Playoff History

David Schoshinski

If you are a DC sports fan including the Capitals (NHL), Wizards (NBA),Nationals (MLB), and Redskins (NFL) you know that all those teams have had a terrible playoff history. The last time a DC sports team won a league title was the Washington Redskins in 1991. The Wizards have not won a championship since 1978 and that was under the Bullets name. The Capitals have never won a Stanley Cup and have only been to one finals and got swept. The Nationals also never won a championship since moving from Montreal in 2005. From 1969 to 2004 the Montreal Expos went to the playoffs once. Not only have the DC sports team not won a championship in a long time, sports teams are usually good during the season but choke in the playoffs.

Nationals

The Washington Nationals have made the playoffs 3 of the last 5 years but have not won a playoff series. In 2015 Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper won the MVP award but the Nationals still could not even make the playoffs. Every year, the Nationals are predicted to be playoff contenders but the team has not shown they can win when it counts. The Nationals this year are improving and have started out strong behind young star Trea Turner.

Capitals

Following the theme of the Nationals, the Capitals consistently make the playoffs and even have won the first round the last 2 years, not including ongoing playoffs. Although, they always lose the second round. This year the Capitals were 55-19 which was the best record in the NHL. The Capitals are amidst a second round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins who beat them last year 4-2. The series is currently 1-2, Capitals down.

Redskins

The story of the Redskins is a little different mostly because they haven’t been that good in recent years but have made the playoffs . The last time the Redskins won a playoff game was in 2005 and they lost in the next round. The Redskins, who are projected to do well this year, drafted Jonathan Allen this year and got Terrelle Pryor in the offseason.

Wizards

The Wizards have made it two of the last three years (not including this year) but couldn’t get past the second round. Leading them is the stars of the team, John Wall and Bradley Beal, who are in a heated second round series with the Celtics hoping to surpass the conference finals. The Wizards are down in the series 1-2. If the Wizards were to win this series, they would play the winner of the Cavaliers vs Raptors series.
