Coperni, a French brand founded by Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, dedicated a segment of their show to a visual performance. Scientists used a device that sprayed Hadid with a material that formed a dress. The idea was to introduce something new to the fashion world. Rather than having the dress ready prior to the start of the show, they performed the making of the dress in front of an audience. It was a raw moment and completely exotic to the world of fashion.

The genius behind the technology for the spray on dress is Manel Torres. The material that formed Hadid’s dress consists of fibers fused with polymers. Polymers can be artificial or non-artificial. Non-artificial polymers come from living organisms, like plants. The final product results in a substance that has the appearance of fabric for clothing, and of course, clothes made with this technology can be worn. However, even though the process is considered revolutionary in the fashion industry, the spray-on dress will not be sold. According to Arnaud Vaillant, the original dress that Hadid wore will be put on display only. Vaillant said, “We’re not going to make money on this, but it’s more of a celebration of innovation and having strong moments in fashion because we’re passionate about pushing fashion forward.”

The performance was Coperni and Torres’ way of simply showing off their innovation. Well-known celebrities such as Kylie Jenner attended the event, and they were first-hand witnesses to the progression of fashion. Torres’ company, Fabrican, started out by aiming to improve healthcare. They produced face masks, casts, and even pain-relief patches using the patented technology.

By creating and advertising the dress with such a novel strategy, Coperni’s and Torres’ collaboration transformed the fashion industry. Those who participated in the show saw how the possibilities in fashion are endless.
