As the recent winter storm rampaged across Virginia, residents are facing treacherous conditions. The sidewalks are covered in ice and the roads still have a layer of snow to them too. The Virginia Department of Transportation urges motorists to stay off the roads. They issued the following statement “The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) needs motorists to stay off the roads throughout Monday so snowplows can safely navigate and push snow.”
Throughout the D.C. region, snowfall has reached between 6 to 12 inches, causing school and government buildings to close. The snowfall has also caused dangerous road conditions and significant problems with transportation.
Fairfax county saw 4 days of closure and had a delay at the end of the school week. Counties across the state also did not fare well. Loudon saw the same amount of days closed and Prince William saw similar results. “Treacherous conditions are expected overnight into Monday morning as snow is predicted to fall at a rate of an inch an hour and accumulation could be as much as 5 to 12-inches in Northern Virginia, Winchester, Harrisonburg, Fredericksburg and parts of Central Virginia.” The Virginia Department Of Transportation says.
Sidewalks are also iced making bus stops and walking very dangerous. People are getting injured and the ice is having serious impacts. The ice is also making it hard for people without cars to get vital things like groceries and other necessities. Hazardous sidewalks also make going to your bus stop very dangerous. Bus stops unfortunately have banks of snow next to them and barely have space to stand. In conclusion, the recent winter storm had a profound impact on the residents of Virginia leading to widespread closures, dangerous conditions, and significant challenges.
