Hollow Knight’s sequel, Silksong, has been one of the most anticipated games for many over the last 6 years, but with the studio developing the game, Team Cherry, being mostly silent about the game’s development, fans are left wondering if the game would ever come out. Luckily, the anticipation surrounding Silksong has revived itself due to a clip of gameplay being featured in the Nintendo Direct for the Switch 2, the sprite sheet for the main character being shown off, and an exhibition dedicated to the game in an Australian museum. All of these together could possibly mean that Silksong will be released this year.
Fans of Hollow Knight would know how Team Cherry has been almost completely silent over the last 6 years since Silksong was announced, leaving the fandom’s only source of information surrounding the game to be from playtesters and game showcases held by larger game companies such as Nintendo, Xbox, and Playstation. A YouTube channel was even made dedicated to giving out daily news about the game’s development named “Daily Silksong News” and out of the 1,570+ consecutive days worth of videos posted, there’s only been 8 days where there has been news. Fans started to slowly lose their interest as the wait became longer and longer but on April 2, 2025, in the Nintendo Direct covering the Switch 2, a nine second clip of unseen Silksong gameplay was shown and along with it, a 2025 release window. While seemingly small, this made Hollow Knight fans get extremely excited. Many were skeptical, however, because in a similar event held by Xbox, they said that Silksong would release in 2023. It did not. Whether or not this would be the same, fans were at least satisfied with some form of news.
A month later, May 1, 2025, two more significant events happened that have made some fans start to genuinely believe that Silksong will come out this year. Firstly, the Melbourne Museum in Australia announced they’d be holding an exhibition dedicated to video games named “Game Worlds.” This exhibition, along with many other games, is to include a section dedicated to Silksong. It will include facts about the development history, concept art, and most interestingly, a playable version of Silksong. As part of promoting the exhibition, the sprite sheet featuring all of Hornet’s (the player character) animations was shown off. This left fans analyzing each bit of it and making theories and predictions on what the purpose of each animation would be.
The Game Worlds exhibition will be in September this year and with the playable version of Silksong supposedly having spoilers for the game, it feels likely that Silksong might be releasing this year some time before September.
