A deal to keep Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was signed late on Thursday, September 26, according to Variety. Just last month, it seemed as if the “door [was] closed” for reaching an agreement between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment over a financing disagreement — Marvel Studios wanted to change the deal and go from receiving five percent of the Spider-Man movie profits to receiving 50 percent, whereas Sony wanted to keep the deal the same. Many thought that this would be the end of Spidey in the MCU, but, much to their surprise, the studios have reached a new agreement.

This new deal means that a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home will be produced by Marvel Studios, with Tom Holland once again portraying the titular character. The movie is set to be released on July 16, 2021. As film producer Amy Pascal put it, the story of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man “took a dramatic turn in ‘Far From Home,’” alluding to the sequel’s shocking cliffhanger, where Spider-Man’s identity was revealed to the world. Many fans who were previously upset about this unresolved twist are now happily looking forward to seeing its impact in the 2021 movie. The deal has been altered to give Marvel Studios roughly 25 percent of the profits from this movie, as well as the right to have Spider-Man in future MCU films.

In a statement, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said that he is “thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and [he] and all of [them] at Marvel Studios are very excited that [they] get to keep working on it.” He also mentioned that “you never know what surprises the future might hold” for Spider-Man as both studios continue to develop him within their respective cinematic universes.

This news has had a positive impact within the Spider-Man fan-base, with everyone now anticipating the future movies. Many fans took to Twitter and Instagram to offer their own opinions on the disagreement when it first came to light — most likely leading the studios to this compromise in the first place — and are now offering a cheerful “welcome back” to their Spider-Man:

Many fans are excited to see where these future MCU films will go now that Spider-Man is back in the MCU mix.
