With over 150 majors and a total of four residential homes, Virginia Tech lies in the heart of the Appalachian mountains, renowned for its excellence in science courses.
This year, the school welcomes their potential students to Hokie Focus, or more commonly known as Hokie day; a welcoming to the potential or incoming freshman towards Virginia Tech’s class of 2030. Incoming freshmen and their families are permitted throughout the day to explore the campus, take a tour of the buildings and enjoy the college’s exquisite cuisine.
“The day is preplanned with a diverse array of events, each lecture with the assigned major of the student’s choice of interest.” The official Virginia Tech website states.
At the beginning of the day, families gathered at the Buress auditorium, where the director of the facility welcomed their new students. After a standing ovation, the professors directed everyone to an enclosed facility predetermined by the student’s choice of study, where the staff of Tech went into detailed instruction of what to expect to learn from the courses that are provided.
“Each class provides you with plenty of staff and resources where we are able to help you,” states one anonymous professor. “We have plenty of required classes for each student to take.”
The rest of the day was spent for students to run around campus participating in the rest of the events. There were campus tours running from 11:30 to 4 PM, lunches in the diverse amount of restaurants placed within the campus, and a local merch shop in the building, providing the students with a 50% discount. Additionally, with a provided personal guide, there was a room tour of the dormitories, each ‘residential building’ including its own pros and cons.
“Even if you don’t have ac, I can guarantee that you will be able to survive here.” An anonymous tour guide had joked. “I brought in my own personal fans so that I could sleep well for the night-and opening the window by just a crack during the night helps as well.”
Students were provided with a personal q and a session with the tour guides and were able to play with the school’s residential ESA dogs later in the afternoon. The whole day was buzzing with excitement, each bright-eyed student excited to see what the new school year would bring them.
There are plenty of job opportunities that students will be able to do throughout the rest of their lives. To be a Hokie is to be innovative, creative and ready to learn-and the world is simply waiting for them to unlock their true potential within their selected majors.
