In 2021, the FCPS School Board designed the plans for the Centreville High School Capital Renovation project. Plans for this renovation were proposed to help mitigate overpopulation and increase space within the school.
However, due to logistical obstacles, progress on the project has been slower than anticipated. County zoning processes and other final decisions have pushed the renovation timeline back multiple times. These setbacks have raised many questions among students, parents, and staff about whether updates will occur at all.
Despite the delays, updated plans had been released mid-November of 2025, showcasing improved classrooms, expanded fine arts spaces, and redesigned common areas to better accommodate Centreville High’s student population. While an official date has not yet been confirmed to begin renovations, the county anticipates providing a more detailed timeline once funding and permits are approved.
The main reason for delays have been reported to be funding disagreements between the Fairfax County School Board and the Board of Supervisors. Additionally, according to a blog post by Pat Herrity, a member of the board of supervisors, there are certain zoning requirements that need to be cleared with the county to ensure a renovation can occur without any external issues.
Many teachers and community members have been vocal about their opinions on pushing back the renovation.
At recent School Board meetings and the December PTSA meeting, which Pat Herrity attended, the updates on the delays were revealed and the staff have been vocal about their opinions on the matter.
CVHS Librarian Kimberely Adams stated the most concerning thing for staff is that “the building isn’t going to be ready for students soon enough. We’re not going to have adequate classrooms that are up to the level that FCPS expects for our students to have the excellence they deserve and our staff are still teaching in conditions that are falling apart around us.”
As Centreville High School continues to grow and prosper, many individuals in the community hope to see advancements in the renovation move forward soon, in order to bring long awaited improvements to the school’s campus. Families can stay informed through FCPS updates and upcoming community meetings that can be found on the FCPS website by searching “Centreville High Capital Project.”
Centreville Highschool was built in 1988.
