The novel The Wedding People by Alison Espach was released in 2024 and quickly became a New York TImes bestseller. It was crowned the Goodreads Choice Awards winner of Readers’ Favorite Fiction and amassed an impressive 4.26 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. The statistics speak for themselves; The Wedding People is a witty, dramatic novel that explores how to start over after what feels like a life ending event.
When Phoebe, a tired adjunct professor no closer to receiving tenure or completing her dissertation, finds out her husband is having an affair with his coworker and wants a divorce, she feels her life is over. She books a one night stay at the Cornwall Inn with plans of ending her life. However, when she arrives she discovers that every other guest at the Inn is there for the fabulous wedding of Lila and Gary. Lila pulls Phoebe into the wedding activities, assigning her to be her maid of honor (and manage her erratic mother). Phoebe is born anew and reminded of the promise of starting over and being true to herself.
The Wedding People charmed me. Over the course of five days you meet a whole cast of characters, from the multiple Jims present at the Inn to the groom’s daughter who insists on being called Juice. The novel is a wonderful character study on the interactions between family members and shows how sometimes the presence of a person uninvolved in the family dynamic can help resolve conflicts or reveal unspoken truths.
As well as a study of family dynamics, the novel also explores the individual experience. Phoebe is a complex, yet relatable character who struggles with creating an identity for herself without the life she once knew. Her growth and progression is exemplified clearly and she’s a character that those struggling with similar issues may appreciate reading about.
In conclusion, The Wedding People definitely deserves its high rating and multitude of good reviews. It is a good book for those looking for a mix of family drama, luxurious resort settings, and personal growth. If you’re looking for a literary fiction that will make you both laugh and cry, The Wedding People is for you.
