The Centreville German Program works hard every year to integrate fun cultural events open for all students.
The monthly combined German Honor Society and German Club meetings are open to all students – not just those who take German classes! Each month they do a fun activity aimed at celebrating German culture. Some of these meetings include Oktoberfest celebrations and gingerbread house decorating competitions. Students in the society have the opportunity to earn points for attendance and for bringing supplies to meetings. Notice of meetings and activities is posted on the GHS instagram account: @wildcatdeutsch
German Honor Society is an application-based program open to all German-speaking students from Sophomore year to Senior year. Those who aren’t in German class but are still interested in German activities can join the German Club, a sister organization to GHS that is open to all students.
The German program also hosts an exciting yearly field trip to the Baltimore German Christmas Market. The trip features an excellent blend of learning, shopping, and eating. The market is located on the harbor and borders a candy store called “IT’SUGAR.” The market features a variety of booths ranging from homemade goods, dog bakeries, and jewelry stores. It’s a perfect place to catch up on some last minute Christmas gift shopping!
The market also features authentic German food. Stands selling hot chocolate, bratwurst, and gluhwein pepper the market, along with other outstanding foods like Belgium loaded fries and crepes.
The trip usually falls in the week before winter break and serves as a nice preview to the upcoming holiday season.
Another exciting opportunity the German program hosts is a student exchange. The CVHS German program has an ongoing exchange with a school in Graz, Austria called HTBLA Kaindorf. Every other year, Centreville students travel to Austria to stay with Austrian families. In the years in between, Austrian students come to Centreville to stay with families of Centreville students.
This is an exciting opportunity for students to fully immerse themselves in another culture and gain authentic experience speaking the language they study. Hosting Austrian students is a unique experience that many schools don’t offer. Centreville students will have their exchange students shadow them at school to experience an authentic American school and will serve as tour guides of our area.
The next exchange is set to occur in Spring 2026 and families interested in hosting Austrian students can reach out to Herr Uden or Frau Rife. Anyone is welcome to host – not just German students!
The German program works to host fun, student-oriented experiences open to the whole school!
